digital scale data out put

I've just purchased a 30" digital scale for the X axis of my M/D. It has
a data out put function. Can anyone explain what that means [beyond the
obvious.]
Can I connect this scale to one of those mini DRO read outs that were
discussed on this list a little while ago?
