The Unimat pictured is a Unimat 1, which is plastic and pot metal,
and not related to the Emco/Edelstatt Unimat DB/SL and Unimat 3, and
other models. Although highly berated by most real Unimat users,
they are apparently extremely re-configurable, but only suited for
soft materials. Some have put it to use making highly complex
machinings using wax, for use in castings.
You might want to check out the following yahoo groups:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/unimat3/
In the UNIMAT group, in there is a posting of a CNC conversion of a
Unimat SL:
The Unimat 3 has been replaced by the identical Unimat 4. I have a
Unimat 4, and some day will be converting it to CNC, I have the
steppers, the stepper mount designs are floating around in my head,
but cant seem to find the time to start.
Most who buy a Unimat today just "have to have one"! If you are
starting fresh, it makes more sense to go with the Sherline or Taig.
Factory support, abundant cheaper tooling, and ready made CNC kits.
