encoders and dial calipers

Thanks for the help on the servo encoders.
But I was thinking about linear encoders for DRO, why not a digital
caliper? I have seen people put a Digital caliper on their Z axis. Why
couldn't you make it output to your 3 axis DRO? Some of them even have
an SPC output built in. Could this be modified to DRO use? The Z axis
on my mini mill is sloppier than the steering wheel on grandpa's pickup
truck!
MSC sells a plastic Mitutoyo 6" digital for 39 bucks! (catalog #
00263418 page 1997) That has to be the cheapest linear encoder
around. Does anyone know if you could "tap" into it and make a 6" z
encoder? And it comes in blue, green, pink, and yellow!
