Kevin,
I need to correct this statement. CAD happens to be one of the acceptable
topics for this group. As in most things in life this is not a clear cut
distinction. You have to look at the general purpose of the question. If
someone wants to know how do I draw a widget in AutoCad that would likely be
considered off topic. If the question is how can I use my AutoCad drawing to
generate g-code that would be quite on topic. The question of how do I use
AutoCad to engrave letters is a little gray. As long as the discussion
sticks to how the program could be used to do a definite common home shop
function needed in the CNC process I would personally let it continue as on
topic. Basically I try to consider if the discussion would have broad
application to the home shop CCED crowd and is not just an isolated user
issue or something that would be more effectively handled by an AutoCad user
group.
As far as software piracy goes, the CCED group and moderators do not condone
or support it period. As has been pointed out in the past and as you have
mentioned there are occasions where other than direct support is desired
even when the software if fully legal. The position I try to take when the
discussion is on topic, but could be construed to support piracy is to make
a strong statement that piracy and activities that support privacy are not
allowed on the group and are grounds for banning. If the participants are
legit they should feel free to carry on. If they are not I would hope they
would drop the discussion on the list. Unless someone is clearly pirating
software I would prefer to work on the honor system and expect that the
group would consider the anti piracy reminder as just that and not as a
pointing finger unless you have reason to feel guilty.
Hope that clears up the issues a little bit.
