You didn't mention what machine your converting,
so can't really make any recomendations.
I used 5/8" in my Grizzly 1006 Mill.
Fits and works great.
Does not seem to be any problems with loads.
It appears there was room for 1".
It seems that the 5/8" is much more cost effective, over other sizes.
