Rookie cnc router question

on 2003-01-18 22:04:38 UTC
Hello,
I'm a woodworker testing the waters in cnc machines. I bought an xyz
machine from ebay, and now I'm at a standstill. The table functions
100% from it's manual controls, return to origin, x,y and z axis all
work fine. It has a rs232 port on the back of the table, I hooked it
up to the computer through that, and downloaded several demo programs
off the net.

Go to www.imagetogcode.com or www.imagecarve.com They write G code
from pictures, and they are less than $200.00. This is the sort of
work I'd like to do with this router.

The table is made by asymtek, a model 101, and was used in the
manufacture of printed circuit boards. According to a google search I
ran, it's a pretty expensive machine.

I machined a fixture to hold a flex shaft driven dremel hand piece
for the thing. After I mounted the dremel tool, I saw that Sears
sells a flex drive 5 amp 1/4" router. I'll install that if the
dremel proves too wimpy, with it's whopping .5 amp motor.

I can write g-code programs with the software, to the point of
generating 3d views of the finished part that you can rotate around
on the screen. I cannot find a way to execute the programs. The
machine sits still no matter what I try. I suspect I need another
piece of hardware ( motion control card?)

Maybe it's just a button I'm overlooking, although I doubt it. Could
I ask around your circle for advice? If you wanted to, the free demo
program at the image to gcode site is a small file to download and
you could poke around it and tell me what a jerk I am for not seeing
the execute button!

Thanks, Keith
