Limit and Home switches

Hi,
I finally got all the bits and pieces made and installed to put limit switches on my Sherline. Overkill... I guess, but I'm modeling a setup for a bigger machine down the road. I'm using Mach1. My question; When a limit switch is activated does the machine stop then reverse and back off the switch or must you jog it back/off? Same question re. home switches as I've seen mention that the limit switches can be setup as home switches. If the axis does back off in either case, how or where do you tell it how much to back off or where to go to in homing?
