Joachim,
In my opinion you should look for the controller software with the
most features that'll be useful in the work you want to do.
Compatibility with any "standard" is not a big requirement.
Based on your experiences with the Emco VMC 100 you may find that
the "hobby" controllers are about 20 years behind the commercial
controllers feature-wise. I'm also looking for controller software
for a retrofit on an older CNC machine, but nothing I've looked at
so far has what I consider to be basic features required in a
controller.
