I am on the side of using common PC boards- a parallel port card is
under $20 from many sources, and db25 cables are equally cheap. Keep the
special purpose stuff outside the computer, in its own box.
Have a look at B&B Electronics- www.bb-elec.com
They have a small box that is a parrallel port opto isolator- fully self
contained, not a lot bigger than a db25 connector. It has a screw
terrminal strip on it for the outputs. Part number PPIO, $99.95
Also a simple PC card with a db25 on one end and a screw terminal block
for all 25 pins.
