VM 4.0 does do a great job with Rhino files. VM Free will let you import
.stl output from Rhino and for the price does a great job, but is quite
limited in functionality compared to the pay version. If you are even
possibly considering VM 4.0 I can offer you a special deal if you
contact me off list.

You may want to take a look at DeskCNC. It has the ability to generated
3D toolpaths from .stl files, a 2-1/2D CAM module, a picture to g-code
module, a PCB module and at the moment comes with a free controller
board. A pretty good deal as a starter package.
