You could do that if you had a means of measuring peak (as opposed to
average) voltage - e.g., if you used an oscilloscope; however, as the
Geckos are chopper drives, taking a voltmeter reading at the motor
terminals will give some sort of "average" voltage, over whatever duty
cycle the Gecko's chopper circuitry is delivering into your particular motors.

Easier to measure the supply voltage into the Geckos.
