Great stepper motor and drive advice from a "lurker"

on 2003-02-24 12:27:17 UTC
I just received the following email and think the advice is certainly
worth posting to the group (Thanks to Remo!)

Hi,

Sorry for contacting you direct, but I am not a member of the group.

I have been studying this for about a year, due to conflicting
information from people who know what their talking about.

If you want to run your motors comfortably then multiply the motor
voltage by 17.5 then start with a current set resistor half the motor
amps ratingĀ and keep upping it untill the motors reach 48 degrees
centigrade after 2 hours constant running.

I ran my 34s at 55deg for a year and a half with a voltage x25 and
they still run perfectly.

At 48 deg your at half the temperature that the winding inside the
stepper would melt, the problem with a lot of power is not the motor
but the drives they dont like a lot of heat.

the difference between 48deg and 55 is only just measurable by touch,
so get some low cost measuring equ to be sure.

Also make sure your motor mounts are made of alumininum and not steel.

Im no electronics person but I have worked all this out the hard way
and that is worth more than any experts opinion.

hope this helps,

Reems.
