HI all -
I think that CNC machines have the ability to blur the lines
between "lathe", "mill", and whatever else e.g. grinder, hot-wire
cutter, etc... You really have to start rethinking what your
capabilities really are once you have a spindle and 2 or 3+
computer-controlled axis movements. In designing and building my
own CNC projects, I am always thinking about these new
capabilities, and my CNC machine will give me the capability to do
both sides of what is normally considered only-lathe and only-mill
work. So, I think, it is very relevant to the goals of the group
in regards to "building" a CNC, to discuss the "why's" and "for
what's" and other criteria, requirements, and goals of the machine
that one is trying to build, in order to design it in such way as
to get the most versatility from it. It's like asking, "if I were
to design and build my machine this way, could I also use it this
way...?" Is this group really only about "building" CNC's, and
not at all about "designing" them to meet our goals?

Carlos Guillermo

Remember the group if for conversions etc for a Hobby CNC.
I could see no CNC, or Conversions in that thread, could you?
Now if you
were adding screws, steppers etc then it would have been On TOPIC.
As to the spindles, they were building spindles and these could be
used for
CNC conversions or Hobby uses.
Yes it is sometimes a judgement call, sometimes it is because I am
500
messages behind.
With now 3400 members in the group, and over 40K messages in the
archives,
how much use would the group have been if not tightly reigned in
from the
start???
The group was started to help people in there home shops to learn
about CNC,
it was never designed to be for commercial or general maching.
Nor will it
ever be as long as I am List Owner.
