Hello Les,
In what form did you use mild steel as a track? Ive been going back and
forth with ideas...dual vee,or a round tgp shaft with 2 bearings oposing
each other riding at 45deg on it(I was told its an old esab design), or
pillow blocks...
So am I understanding you are putting your bridge is intention by using the
spring loaded skate bearing?
What do you think about making the bridge out of aluim.? Isnt aluim stiffer
than steel?
You build furniture dont you? I thought I saw a link to your web site a long
time ago.. Do you do highpoint? We tried it many years ago but prooved to be
too much work.
Thanks again
Chris

HI Chris,
My plasma gantry is about 5' and rapids at 400 IPM with no problems. I have
had it running over twice that speed but it occasionally loses steps at high
speed. It is built like a T-square - the cross of the T uses spring loaded
skate bearings about 19" apart, running on a mild steel track. The other end
has a single skate bearing to take the weight. It is not exactly the
ultimate in precision machining but it is perfectly adequate for the work I
do.
My bridge is lighter than yours - I tried to keep the weight down as much as
possible. There are two reasons for the weight reduction exercise. Firstly
it gives better acceleration and secondly the machine is winched up into the
ceiling when not in use. I don't have enough spare space to have a 10" x 6"
machine sat on the floor all the time.
