Just a quick note regarding the message below and replies by Jon Elson & Ray
Henry
As those who know me are aware, any reputation I have for being an
electronic-type engineer is stricktly over-rated - I like to think that I'm
a pretty good mechanical designer but know just enough electronics to be
dangerous - Several folks in addition to Jon & Ray have made comments to me,
off list, on aspects of the design, which I appreciate -
The dropping resistor was a blunder on my part as I just worked backwards
to the resistance required to not blow a 1/2 watt resistor and never thought
about the time constant - Must have been a coffee deficiency - A better
value as calculated (and suggested by Dan Mauch) would be 5000 Ohms - This
will dissipate a couple of watts and a 5 watt resistor should be adequate -
This will discharge the capacitor in a couple of minutes and still not
dissipate too much energy -
As Ray mentioned, we allowed for two transformers but tested with only one
as a minimal system -
This group is a source of great information and comments and corrections to
my articles are definitely appreciated -
See you guys at NAMES - The folks at NAMES have confirmed availability of a
meeting room adjacent to our display area that we can use for a "CNC Gab
Fest" after the close of the official day on Saturday - We can have the room
from 5:00 PM until the security people throw us out - Now all we need is to
organize the pizza delivery -

Roland Fresitad has quite a reputation, but I am more than a bit confused on
the power supply engineering in his current article in "Home Shop
Machinist"
