RH6.1 build

Hi,

I need a little help or enlightenment. I have been trying to build a new
kernel on my RH6.1 machine using the Prepatched RTlinux kernel from the
fsmlabs site (kernel 2.2.14) but I seem to have hit a snag which I don't
understand. The compilation of the kernel seemed to go OK - no error
messages and made a bzImage fine. I installed this in the /boot/ directory
and then tried to set the new kernel up from 'linuxconf', 'new kernel'
script. It wouldn't let me do it as it said that /dev/hda5 as the root
directory either doesn't exist or is not a unix file system. I know it does
exist as its the one specified for the plain linux kernel which does boot up
OK. I then tried altering the lilo.conf file manually and built an 'initrd'
image file using 'mkinitrd', however, when I now try to boot it to the new
kernel, it starts but then hangs with an error message saying that the
machine has no memory and then:-

Kernel panic: kmem_cache_size_init: Error creating caches
In swapper task - not syncing

Can anyone tell me what is happening and how I can get around the problem
please? I have tried the build twice now with exactly the same results. Do
you think I have a bad download or is there some other problem?

Ian
