Hathaway motion control has some articles on sin/cos encoders
no schematics but they do discribe some of the requirements

RSF Electronics http://www.rsf.net/ dosent list the MSA654 on there site
but if its similar to the other MSA65X encoders it wil have ether a sq-wave
digital
or 1v p-p analog output to feed into a digital counter or 2-channel ADC
the lm339 comparator leads me to suspect that this encoder has digital
output
looks like a nice unit ether way
