I've used what's called `Constant Force Spring'
It's the tape part of a tape measure!
Fit it in a groove and the free end will keep
itself rolled up.
Use one on each side of the carriage or whatever
so they will balance each other out.
I've seen it about 1-1/4" wide, would think
it would be available in wider stock.
