Cutting cheapo DRO scales

I've just bought a DRO "kit" for my Shoptask that includes 3 of those
low cost scales.
The problem is that the X axis scale is longer than it needs to be and
either interferes with the X axis motor on the left end or hangs out way
past the right end.
Now, it seems a shame, but I'm seriously thinking about cutting a few
inches off the end, if I can't work out some other mounting scheme.
What I don't know is if this is safe ? Can these scales be cut ?
