I use an ATX power supply. I use 5V to power an HC11 and I use the 3.3V
rail to drive the motors. It would not stay on because I didn't have
anything on the 12V rail. I connected an old hard drive up to it and it
works fine now. I'm a little surprised it works because a hard drive really
doesn't use much power on the 12V rail once it's spun up. I have 4 steppers
on it that can each pull 3A / coil. So you usually need to have some
balance on rails but how much is dependant on the power supply.
