If you have the capability, I'd consider a one chip microprocessor
that listens on the serial line ( you can get a usb interface
adaptor), and does all the work of stepping X number of steps by
itself. It does need the capability of programming the chip yourself,
although there are some STAMP microprocessors that can be programmed
in basic.
