maximising y-axis movement range

Hi all,
Our club has a CNC'ed Sherline. We are using it mainly to learn about
CADCAM and cutting unchallenging (cost, tools plus skills) things
like foam, wood, MDF, waste plastics. We want to make a MDF tooling
plate to mount onto the table in such a way as to maximise the y-axis
movement range.
The problem is the limited throat of the mill. So we figure that the
best way is to mount it so the the frontmost edge of the plate is
flush with the frontmost edge of the table. This is so that we can
move the tooling plate (and the table) right up to almost touch the
z=axis column (max. -y). Is this the correct way to maximise the y-
axis movement range?
Thank you very much for any ideas put forth.
