Yo Ray;

Seems to me that you got that description backwards. If you mount the plate to
the front of the table, and the plate extends all the way back into the throat,
you've just lost all movement in the y axis. On the other hand, if you mount
the plate on the back of the table, and extend it out past the front of the
table, you can hold a bigger work piece, with the caveat the you'd have to spin
it, (the work piece), around to do the other side.
