Adept System for home CNC

I have a fairly new (~1995) PC board chip pick and place enclosure
that I want to convert to a home CNC setup. It has X-Y gantry and a
Z axis as well. The whole system is controlled by an Adept, Inc.
robot computer which has its own OS.
The setup has a few linear motors, a few servo motors and every axis
is encoded.
I have found alot of literature on the OS and some on the hardware.
I need to learn how to use the adept OS to control the hardware and
more importantly, how to interface the adept box with a PC.
I dont know much about this hardware so any help or suggestions on
how to get started is appreciated.
Any ideas for converting this to a CNC setup?
Is encoding necessary for a home CNC?
How can I take a tool path file and feed it to the motor controller?
Would I be better off ditching the Adept box and reinterfacing the
motors to a PC driver board?
