Hardware/Software compatability

Hello all
I am new to the list, and new to CNC although I've been a machinists for
over 40 years. I am putting together a desktop setup, Taig mill and I have
pulled together the hardware, to complete the setup. Well almost. The
stepper drivers I chose were the Pacific Scientific 6420s. They look like
they will do most of what I want, other than it looks like I need to do my
own programing to get them to do the job.
My question is what software, if any, will work with these
indexers/drivers? Do I in fact need to become a software guy (after 30
years in computer mainframe hardware)?
I have decided that I can use the "driver" side of the indexer/drivers that
I have, but I will loose the ability to readout the limit switches, and the
encoder on my steppers.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks
Don Rogers
