Re: Conversion Of Mill to CNC (LONG)

Thanks to those who replied to my original post. I have now learnt
that this is not a simple project. There seem to be many variables
that affect each and every aspect of the conversion. However I think
that I now have a better understanding of the process.
I have now decided that I need to address the ball screw issue sooner,
rather than later. Allan who converted his mill to CNC used 3/4" x
13/64" ball screws from McMaster-Carr. I am sure that there are as
much differences in ball screws as there are between a Chevy and a BMW.
Is there one brand of ball screw (ball nuts) that are recommended over
others?
I find that there is not much detail in the specs on the McMaster-Carr
site, EFF, TPI etc. Or at least they are not obvious to me as a
complete novice. Are the McMaster-Carr screws 5 TPI?
Mariss, thanks for your step-by-step approach to making decisions on
motor requirements. Using your formula I came up with needing 376.6
watt motors. (200 IPM x 1000lbs.) Perhaps these are a bit on the high
side but you said numbers that would impress me and ones that would
break and bend things. :-)
Now my problem comes with the specs on the ball screws, TPI and EFF.
As I said these numbers are not on the M-C web site.
Once I get these and figure out lead screw torque which brand(s) of
servo motor is the best?
Servos seem to have so many different specs that one needs to be an
engineer to figure them out. What voltage? Do they need an internal
brake? Amplifiers and on and on it goes.
I am sure that when this process is over that things will all appear
very simple and logical, now it seems overwhelming, but I am
determined to stumble along until I am successful. With the guidance
of those on this list I will get there!!
