Steve:
Having rebuilt many spindle in my career, and having worked for Cincinnatti,
I can say without hesitation that if you have never done it then you stand a
chance of at spending more than that to learn how the first time. Spending
the money for the radial thrust bearings for the spindle and then not
getting the preload correct due to wear in the spacer sleeves or improperly
assembling the bearings will cause the bearings to go out in a matter of
minutes sometimes. Then you would have to send the spindle in for exchange
and be out the cost of the replacement bearings, time as well as the rebuilt
cost. The spindle radial bearing stack could easily cost $500 plus just for
the bearings alone. I think the price is quite good considering the
alternatives.
