No reason why not to both of your questions.
Plenty of people are running Gecko based controls on Series 1's
I can't stress enough that you go to Marriss's site at
http://www.geckodrive.com and download the white papers under support
for details of the drives and power supplies.
Most Bridgeport motors are 9 wire motors and as such can handle both
220v and 440 v
I have just swapped a 440 v one over here in the UK to run off a VFD
on our 240v domestic supply with no problems whatsoever.
