Unfortunately I don't need one at the moment.

One of my projects has steppers, and the other has big DC Servos with
at yet unidentified rotary encoders.

My concern at the moment would be a lot more about effectively mounting
and protecting the strip.
A strip prone to damage would be worse than useless, after a few
botched projects ruined by a hosed encoder.

That issue has little to do with the source of the strip or sensor.

That is the killer part of the project, not the strip and sensor IMHO.

Having the option to add other features to the sensor, like a constant
flow of clean air to blow crud away from the reader could be more of
an option with a self designed and fabricated reader.

BTW, the "No Adj. Necessary" "Feature" of the HP reader in this case
is exactly what prevents you from using a higher resolution strip.

The data sheet I have shows HP only has the HEDS-9200 reader in question
for 300 & 360 lines/Inch.

125, 250, 500, 1000/Inch or .02, .04, .08 mm or anything else sane for
the measurements we are looking for are simply not an option.
