It could work in theory, but there is also the problem that the more
difficult the software is to use, the more revenue the company gets when it
bases it's revenue stream on support. This is a poor feedback loop.
My favorite remains the frequency of use proposal with a floating quantity,
like the number of uses over the last 7 day period. With a floating
quantity, you might be able to use it 3 times in one Saturday afternoon, or
three different days during the week. When you think about it, the hobbyist
may not use it more than a few times a week. A small shop owner would use
it a few times a day, since the machinist will alternate between CAM and
running the CNC. A large shop has one or more guys that punch out code 8
hours a day while others utilize the codes. Those are the places that will
pay $20,000 for a seat without flinching. After all, they are probably
keeping $5,000,000 of machinery busy with one CAM program.
One very interesting option, EasyCAM has a java application that does CAM on
the web. You go to their web site and send it a DXF. You can edit the
paths online and then grab the Gcode in the clipboard. It actually works,
I've tried it.
