Direct conversion generally recommends using 200-300 in-oz for X and
Y, and 300-400 for Z. Changing to ball screws will significantly
reduce this, but up your cost.

If you can find dual shaft models, you can preserve the manual modes,
otherwise, you might consider some sort of coupler mechanism to give
you manual, but it's going to be messy, I think.

Best thing I've heard of is an acme thread down the middle of the
column, seems to be more balanced that way. Also, I've heard of
putting the thread on the right hand side of the mill column. Left
hand side will do if you remove the tension arm and go to a gas lift
system, or counterbalance. You could try to drive the fine feed knob,
which sounds good, but there's a lot of backlash in that system.
