Bill,
I bought the Magenta kit for under £40 the lot, it does everything that the MPLAB does plus the TUTORIAL was run in a magazine called EPE and comes with the kit. The only drawback was having to solder it all together but it was easy, just took a while.
Regards,
Terry.

I have just bought a PIC MPLAB-ICD Development kit. £99 from Farnell and
others. It seems expensive but if you want to get into PIC16F877
programming it is ideal. The kit includes a demo board with an 877 on board
and once you have installed the suplied software and plugged it all
together you can get straight down to programming/in circuit
debugging/scratching your head why it dosen't do what you wanted. There is
loads of software on the web and on the supplied discs, including servo
control and stepper drivers. I haven't found a complete DRO yet but most
of the parts are covered somewhere.
Regards
Bill Phillips
