There are all sorts of expensive measuring equipment that use ball-bears as a basis for the coarse steps. The ball are manufactured to very close limits. These machines are not seen very often these days because the electronic twiddly things have taken over.

All the talk of linear encoders has wandered all over the map.
Several years ago there was a thread like this in the metalworking
newsgroup.
At the time some people were talking about "Induction" (If I recall)
sensors based on very close precision bearing balls.
They were simply packed tightly in a non-magnetic tube of a slightly
larger diameter.
This seems like the best option from several standpoints including
toughness. Obviously it is more compled to read, but once you make
the step to a uController, it should simplify the task greatly.
