This is exactly what Shooting Star Technology is doing: a rack and a
matching gear attached to a rotary encoder. Web site:
www.star-techno.com They use 2000 counts/revolution on their encoders
and advertise .00005 inch resolution. The rack is protected by
corrugated plastic.
