My cnc SuperMax mill uses direct drive (well, belt driven 1:1 ratio)
1100 oz*in steppers on 5 TPI ballscrews. Using Gecko G201's
and my 75VDC 1KW power supply it works great (0-2 ips in 1/4 second
on the X&Y, twice as fast on the quill).

My guess on the 400 oz*in servo is that value is its 5% duty
peak value, and might only have a 40 oz*in continuous value,
not so good for direct drive milling. I'd say try a 2.5 : 1
or 3:1 gear ratio for a start.
