If you plan to move up to a bigger machine later on then the G210's are
a good choice and would save you money in the long run but if you really
only need a smaller 3 axis driver board for the sherline then Tim's
suggestion is wise.
I have built quite a few of the steppper systems using the case,
powersupply, fan and heatsinks with the G210 that are listed on my web
site. You should have asolutely no problems with a horizontal heatsink
for several reasons.
1. The G210 have an automatic reduced current mode that will reduce the
current to 33% of the set value when the driver isn't stepping a motor.
2. The G210 has a built in heatsink good to 2.9A but my heatsink provide
further insurance.
You do not need to disconnect the cable from the motor when manually
turning the stpper motor, If you consider the following:
The G210 terminal 7 is the Disable function which when grounded turns
off the output to the steppers thus allowing manual operation with power
on to the drives.
You can manually turn the handwheel with the power supply shut off but
you will notice the red led in the G210 flickers. It would be better to
have the power on with a SPST switch between the disable terminal and
ground and to then manually turn the stepper.
