I agree with you. No matter how old and beat-up it looked I thought I could
replace it.. Well, in the end the old part is back on there and still works
fine.. :)
I was successful at creating my own Brass ACME Nut when I first got my old
mill. Every place I contacted told me that I could only buy it and the
leadscrew as a matched pair and that would cost me around $1200 per axis..
Sheesh!
Then, about 6 months later I found the Cad_Cam* list. I was ok with the
0.005" resolution that I was getting on my mill with all its old'ness and
manual compensation for the semi-loose ACME. Someone told me on the list
that it was in McMaster/Carr! ha! Oh well... Live and learn...
But now with CNC and Ballscrews?? Hmmm... I wonder...
For me Jon, its very much a sizable learning curve. Sort of getting the
"Online" Apprentisship <--- Bad spelling ) training...
