---useless flame fodder snipped-----
MS-DOS and PC-DOS back in the days when more than one company produced a DOS
operating system this is a similar situation. They are roughly compatible,
but the details do differ.
EMC is pretty well customized for only the RedHat flavor of Linux. Currently
there are 2 versions of RedHat that are supported 5.2 and 6.2. If you are
bold and want to possibly spend more time messing with Linux and EMC but not
making any chips go with RedHat 6.2. If you just want to set it up and get
to the business of cutting metal use the RedHat 5.2 version. While some
people have gotten EMC to work on 6.2 I am not aware of anyone actually
running a machine with anything but the 5.2 version of RedHat.
