What I would
like to do is build a cnc table for a plasma/oxy
acetylene torch. I have combed the net looking for
some data and I think that I have a good I idea of
what I need to accomplish.
I would like to build a table that can
handle a 4x8' sheet

Where you are I have been! Though only a few steps
further advanced! The seductive part of CNC is it looks
cheap to do. What you propose for a machine will work
to some degree. The question is, are your expectations
inline with the machines capabilities?
While your specifications for the plasma table will cut
plate. It will do a poor job on sheet metal (heat
warpage). Thin sheet metal requires a machine capable
of 500 ipm of travel speed. Which is not possible with
a lead screw setup. Also another factor not frequently
mentioned is an air desiccation unit is needed for
quality CNC plasma.
Build for use! Do the research and study necessary to
know you machines capabilities. Before you buy the
first piece. It will be much less frustrating!
Enjoy the ride,
Ken
