Strange plastic material

Hi,

I have some questions if anyone would know anything about a strange plastic
material.

But how to describe it ?

Well, you know me by now, I can be a bit "crazy" from time to time, so what
the heck :)

When I lived down at Florida Keys, I did a wild job. Arnold Swartzenegger
did the movie "true lies" and part of the scenes took place on the old seven
mile bridge. Part of this had once been a railroad bridge, but was "converted"
some time in the 50s, - I think. Anyway, after the new bridge opened, kids
started using the old one for car racing. So they removed sections of it so
that no one could enter it. For the movie, they had to put these sections
back, because they needed to cross it with some big trucks. These parts was
made of wood ! You had to see it, to believe it. The top deck was made of 3
layers of 12 by 3" - first two in +/- 45 degrees to the last one. The main
headers were pressure glued 5-6' high. The top was thin plywood. The original
asphalt had some light gravel in it, some almost white. The plywood was painted
like this, and I just could not believe it ! I was down on my knees, and
feeling with my hands, until I found where the plywood started.

Well, I guess I could tell a few more crazy things :) We were several to take
down this section after the movie was done, but strange things happened. The
others got sick and other unexpected stuff. So I was the only one there, and
the people in charge was away on business. I studied the bridge for hours,
and this could not be done alone. No way ! But because nobody would see me,
- why not try some real wild things :) So I did the job alone, to everyones
surprise, - and even faster than expected. I got the payment for the whole
crew :) <grin>

( by the way - I did something stupid, and lost a section in the ocean. I had
to swim for it with a rope, and haul it to shore with the car. The wild thing
was that 15 minutes before I had studied several sharks down there - ..yes, I
had a large knife as comfort :)

Back to the story again. The lower side of it, was made to look like the
rest, with rivets, bolts and nuts. Rusty and peeling paint. At 1-2 feet,
you could not see it was fake ! I still can't understand why they had put so
much work into it, - because there were no close up pictures in the movie that
would reveal this.

The nuts and bolts were fake too. By some marks on the nuts, I think I
found the original they had used as a mold. These fake items was made of a
yellow, a bit grainy kind of plastic. It must have been in liquid form, and
poured into the molds. They were hard like some solid - real hard rubber, and
not brittle. I could penetrate it with a nail, but I could not "smash" them
with the hammer. I showed it to several, but no one had ever seen anything
like it.

Could anyone here have a clue ?

( sorry about the long and strange story, but then .. - why not :)
