Unfortunately it does only project. Try this;

Make a flat sheet with a width of the circumference of the cylinder.
Cut a slot or an edge with a sketch of the flattened curve you want.
Sketch a line lengthwise across the middle of the part.
Add a sheet metal bend across the line with the radius of your cylinder.

You'll have to fudge a bit since the software won't let you make a perfect
part. you'll have to back the angle down to 359.9 degrees and fool around
with the radius a bit.
