You mentioned that the Z axis was the problem. It may be that you have a
load on the Z axis even at rest. If this load is sufficient it will
cause the dithering and heating of the motor. Try disconnecting the
motor from the Z axis mechainsm by removing the drive belt or the
coupling and see what it does. If it still is noisy and still gets hot
then you probably have a bad motor or dirty brushes. If the problem goes
away by disconnecting the motor then try counterbalancing the load on
the Z axis.
