I wonder when manufacturers are going to start building lathes
specifically for CNC retrofit.

Right now the typical bench lathe has:

1) a Z axis rack,
2) a threading gearbox,
3) a crosslide gear box
4) a compound slide
5) a multi speed (ie 8 or 9) spindle gearbox
6) a tailstock set over
7) a taper attachment
8) a feedrod
9) a half nut and thread position indicator

that are ALL redundant on a CNC machine. Basically all a CNC retrofit
lathe needs to have are:

1) about 3 spindle speeds in the gear box.
2) a strong 3 phase motor (drive it with a VFD)
3) a strong bed, carriage, etc.
4) zero backlash X and Z ballscrews, with provisions for mounting a
drive motor.
5) a good chip handling system
6) a good coolant system

Furthermore, for the price of a good DRO system these days, one can
build a really good CNC retrofit system. Aren't the DROs these guys
selling redundant too ?
