Depends on the context it's used in:

Direct Numerical Control: basically, you've got a powerfull (er, in comparison to the
early CNC machines; these days both ends tend to be PC based) computer connected
to a simple CNC control, and the more powerfull computer directly feeds commands
to the CNC control; usually via a RS232 port, but TCP/IP over ethernet is slowly
becoming more popular. This is the most common set up.

Distributed Numerical Control: basically, a network of computers that collaborate to
effect the numerical control of a machine. Traditionally, this has been done with
mainframes and minicomputers connected via RS232 and token-ring networks, but
nowadays the industry is moving towards PC & internet based solutions - a *nix
cluster is cheaper, faster, and more flexable then the "big-iron" mainframe approach.

Dumb Numerical Control: what you call the machine when it's not working right... :-)
