I was thinking about this the other day. I think with the abundance of
cheap Serial PLC based Stepper controllers coming around the bend we'll
see demand for this support pretty soon. Specifically, I took a long
hard look at the dual stepper controller from
http://www.stepperboard.com/ncstepper.htm . With the NC firmware setup,
you can send the board a "go to X,Y" or "arc to X,y A,b N" and the
controller does it while you sit and wait for the Serial "Busy" pin to
drop. It supports micro, half, and full stepping, with mode changes on
the fly. That makes the Software component of it a lot easier, because
it takes away all the where-am-I, get-from-here-to-there, and
don't-move-too-fast logic.
I was really impressed with the possibilities here, but decided to go
with the more conventional Parallel port setup. (Because I want this to
work before the end of my natural life, and I am a very slow programmer)
... And $129 for an assembled and tested 2 amp, 34 volt microstepping
dual motor controller seems like a very good deal to me.
