Nope, you don't need cnc (ie precise) control over the spindle to do
thread milling. You do need:

- an appropriate cutter, running at approx the correct rpm

- 3 axis control to do simultaneous X,Y & Z motion (ie helical plunge)

which will do both internal and external milled threads. For both
internal and external milled threads, remember you have to pull back
from the threads at the bottom of the cut, before retracting Z.
