If I get your drift right you are asking if the encoders are connected to a backlash prone leadscrew. If you read my orginal wish list there is no mention of a rotary encoder used in this way. This is the reason for a linear encoder mounted on the table. The reason for including a rotary encoder input to a PIC based DRO is to allow the use of a rotary table or to use a rotary encoder connected to the table via a steel wire tensioned by a spring. The problems with this sort of arrangement is to pay out and recover the steel wire in a repeatable way. I could draw this type of system but cannot post the drawings on this list and I have little use for it because of the engineering problems and the cheaper alternative of a linear encoder.

It seems like the problem will be how to couple to everyone's shafts.
What would you use for a shaft encoder that would be somewhat
universal? There may be no way to fit full size machines as well as
tabletop machines. Also, a shaft encoder cannot manage the backlash,
so your resolution will be no better than the current lash in the
lead screw, right?
