Jon,
You just described the encoder and disk that is available from Electronic
Goldmine as their motor with optical tach. Total price is about $4.00 and
you get a nice 24 VDC brushed motor for your favorite robot project to go
along with a 1000 slot metal disk and a HP encoder head. OK, you do have to
disassemble the parts.
