Does this mean that a driver board is not used? If so does the computer

Doug: FORGET about this! There is not enough power out of the
parallel-port to power a wrist-watch, let ALONE even any kind of machine-tool!
Even for a VERY small machine, even, say, 1/4 as large as the smallest
Sherline lathe, DRIVER circuits and POWER-supplies are necessary for even Size-17
motors! The electrical output from ANY printer-port is only perhaps 0.125 Watt
@ 5VDC on a good day! BARELY enough to light an EFFICIENT LED! There isn't
even any "+5VDC" available AT the LPT-1.
Besides, the inductive details of such as steppers can WASTE your computer,
if you go "tryin' stuff" at the parallel port, having NO CLUE what is "in
there"!
