In a pinch, I have seen engraving done with a center drill. Not ideal by
any means, but it does work to some extent. But, a V bit is ideal,
depending on the shape of the impression you would like to make.

Most fine engraving is done with an engraving bit. It looks like a V bit,
but can have a flat on the end. The flat is there if you are going to do a
lot of fill (pocketing)
